The new Domestic Violence Bill says that domestic violence affects 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men within their lifetime and it can take many forms. Most people when they hear or see the word domestic violence think about the physical harm that happens to the individual e.g. hitting, punching, kicking, spitting etc.

However domestic violence can also take the forms of - psychological / emotional abuse e.g. controlling behaviour, cutting individuals off from family and friends, using threats and insults;

Economic abuse - preventing the individual from having a job, a bank account and generally withholding money from them; Sexual abuse e.g. rape, sexual harassment, forcing or coersing the individual to take part in sexual acts that they do not wish to.
